My first teaching job was in Egypt, working with students who were English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. The challenge of educating these students was immense, as they were not only navigating the complexities of a new language but also adjusting to unfamiliar learning expectations. I became accustomed to specific classroom challenges, particularly when it came to behavior. I worked with spoiled students who were used to getting their way, affluent parents who had high expectations, and a structured private school environment where certain things felt predictable.Despite this, the dual responsibility of managing behavior and ensuring academic progress often felt overwhelming. I quickly realized that without a clear and effective system, I would struggle to create a supportive learning environment where both my students and I could thrive. My breakthrough came when I shifted from reactive solutions to proactive strategies—developing structured routines, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement techniques. Once implemented, these strategies transformed my classroom: disruptions decreased, students became more engaged, and I was finally able to focus on teaching. This experience not only improved my students' outcomes but also reignited my passion for teaching.
